Obsidian - Connected Notes

Great app with a huge plugin ecosystem and an amazing community. Obsidian is one of the best knowledge management tools available. However, I have two issues on iPad: 1. The toolbar cannot be fully hidden. Even when empty, it still takes up valuable screen space. Please add an option to completely disable it. 2. CSS snippets are hard to manage on iPad. It would be very helpful to create and edit CSS snippet files directly inside the app. I hope these improvements will come in future updates.

Nachdem ich viele Notiz-Apps ausprobiert habe, bin ich seit einigen Jahren an bei Obsidian hängengeblieben. Ich kenne kein anderes Programm, dass so anpassbar ist (über CSS, Themes und Erweiterungen) und so viele Möglichkeiten bietet. Ich nutze es für mein Tagebuch, für Protokolle, für das Bibelstudium und für sonstige Notizen aller Art. Es gibt keine App, die ich so viel nutze! Die Entwickler machen eine super Arbeit und bieten den Nutzern die größtmögliche Freiheit - vielen Dank! Die mobile App gibt mir die Möglichkeit, meinen Vault mit ca. 12000 Notizen im Markdown-Format immer bei mir zu haben, zu durchsuchen oder zu ergänzen. Die Synchronisation (über Obsidian Sync) klappt hervorragend. Die Versionshistorie ist mir immer wieder sehr nützlich gewesen. Ein großes Lob an die Entwickler - vielen, vielen Dank!

Obsidian the Programm is great, it’s a good markdown editor that used to have a simple minimalist design across all systems. Their Canvas feature is really nice cause you can make nice and simple mindmaps that can reference other files you have already written and their graph view is also pretty cool so you can see how your files are linked to each other and you can find files if you just know something that you linked to it. The bad things about the app are that on IOS you are only allowed to use iCloud or their paid cloud feature for sharing your files across devices (they are just MD, markdown files that are small, this feels like a scam) AND like within the last few days apparently they updated the app and my phone background updated without my consent and now they changed the UI completely, it’s all rounded corners, no matter if it clips into another object, they all NEEED to be rounded apparently. The UI is kind of broken and makes me genuinely nauseous because it’s all floating UI type of stuff. Like Apple Glass UI is already broken and doesn’t look good, this is just like a extension of that but while also significantly inhibiting the functionality of the app. THE HOLE REASON I USE IT is because it is USED TO have a light fast UI with no unnecessary “this is innovation” type of UI where they just make the product worse. I am sad, disappointed and angry. If IOS was not just a bad operating system that takes away my ability to control MY PHONE how I like then I would go back to a previous version of Obsidian. This updated genuinely made me interested in using android or cracking another operating system onto my phone. Like genuinely why are modern companies so Obsessed with making their products worse, taking away user agency and trying to alienate long time users of their products.

Was the latest update even tested on the iPhone??? As an iPhone 16 Pro user, I can no longer use the app normally, because the interface elements go side penal and reading / edit mode are now stuck on top behind the time and battery status, clickable only if rotated to landscape mode. The names of menu elements are chopped off in the navigation… 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ich benutze Obsidian für Dungeon & Dragons Notizen in der Rolle als Spielleiter. Durch die Vielzahl an Plugins gibt es quasi unbegrenzt viele Möglichkeiten. Negative Rezensionen, die sich darüber beschweren, dass sie die Dateien nicht auf ihren Geräten wieder finden, kann ich absolut nicht nachvollziehen. Wenn man 2 Minuten in der Dateien App sucht, dann findet man einen Ordner Namens „Obsidian“ in dem alle Dateien als Textdateien vorhanden sind. In meinem Fall liegt dieser Ordner unter iCloud Drive, vermutlich, weil ich die iCloud Synchronisation aktiviert habe. Man muss nur etwas Zeit mitbringen, um sich in der App zurechtzufinden. Man wird allerdings mit einem absolut mächtigen Werkzeug belohnt.

To be realistic and honest, it does takes a while to get it off the ground and get it right. If all you look for is an out-of-the-box note-taking app that is cross-platform, that is free, that has cool productivity features, that has modern GUI, and that you’ll use for taking simple notes in school/work/private/whatever without connecting them into a network of knowledge, look elsewhere. I’d recommend something like Notion. If you are willing to commit lot of time to create a working second brain, which is yours and which you can trust, Obsidian is your best bet. But be warned: You will make mistakes, you will install too many community plugins, you will create bloated folder structures and you will realise in the end that all of that was not necessary. But that’s a part of the process. That’s what it takes to start your own productive vault system with interconnected notes, and once you do, you will wonder how you used to live without it. Using Obsidian brought me back to reading, writing, and thinking. And it might do it for you, too. Trust the process and it will serve you well.
